What is Elam Alexander Academy? Elam Alexander Academy is a Georgia Network for Educational and Therapeutic Support (GNETS) program that provides specialized educational, behavioral, and therapeutic services for students with significant social, emotional, and behavioral needs. Our goal is to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in school and eventually transition back to their least restrictive educational environment.  

What is GNETS? GNETS stands for Georgia Network for Educational and Therapeutic Support. GNETS programs serve students whose educational needs require intensive behavioral, therapeutic, and instructional supports beyond what may be available in a traditional school setting.

Why was my child referred to Elam Alexander Academy? Students are referred through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process when the team determines that additional therapeutic and behavioral supports are needed to help the student be successful. Placement decisions are made collaboratively and are based on the individual needs of each student.  

What services will my child receive? Services may include: Academic instruction aligned to state standards, Behavioral support and intervention, Social-emotional learning, Social work services, Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), Small-group and individualized support, Transition planning and support, and Services are individualized based on each student's needs.  

How are behaviors addressed? Our staff use evidence-based behavioral supports, positive reinforcement strategies, restorative practices, and individualized Behavior Intervention Plans to help students learn replacement behaviors and develop self-regulation skills.  

Does Elam Alexander Academy provide mental health support? Yes. Students have access to therapeutic services and support from social workers and other trained professionals. These services may include individual support, small-group sessions, crisis intervention, and connections to community resources.  

Will my child still receive special education services? Yes. Students continue to receive services outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) while attending Elam Alexander Academy.  

How can I stay involved in my child's education? We strongly encourage family involvement. Parents can: 

  • Attend IEP meetings 

  • Communicate regularly with teachers and staff 

  • Participate in school events 

  • Monitor academic and behavioral progress 

  • Collaborate with school personnel to support student success  

How does the transition back to the home school work? Transition planning begins early and is a collaborative effort among families, the student, Elam staff, and the home school district. As students demonstrate academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth, opportunities for increased participation in less restrictive settings are considered.
